The Arizona Student Regents for 2009-2010 are:

Ross Meyer
	Regent Ross Meyer is a third year law student at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. Meyer is very engaged in the Arizona legal community. In addition to his summer clerkship, he is a Research Assistant at the College of Law and also works with an Arizona non-profit, Defenders of Children, providing legal assistance to victims of child abuse. As an undergraduate, Meyer was Vice-Chair for the Arizona Students' Association, as well as President of Undergraduate Student Government, where he aided in adoption of a unified statewide plan for tuition. He aspires to impact education policy through his education and service as a Regent. His appointment is effective through June 2010.
Jennifer Lyn Ginther
	Regent Jennifer Ginther is currently pursuing a PhD. in Biology at Northern Arizona University, where her research focuses on the evolution, ecology, and epidemiology of Burholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis.  While pursuing her advanced degrees, Jennifer worked with the Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Resource established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and with Booz Allen Hamilton to support the Department of Homeland Security. Her appointment is effective through June 2011.

What are Student Regents?

• Students from Arizona's public universities who are appointed by the Governor to represent the more than 105,000 students attending ASU, NAU, and UA.
  (see Selection of the Student Regent)
• The Student Regent position rotates among ASU, NAU, and UA.
• Examples of issues Regents deal with include: tuition, budget, admission standards, hiring of University Presidents, and faculty issues such as salaries and workload.
• Effective with FY 2001-2002, there is a voting Student Regent and a non-voting Student Regent on the Board.  (see History)

Selection of the Student Regent

• The Student Regent is chosen through a rigorous process that begins with candidates applying to the Board of Associated Students of Arizona.
• The student Board forwards three final candidates to the local student government on campus where the nominees are confirmed and forwarded to the Governor's office.
• The Governor conducts interviews and nominates one student for the position.
• The Governor's nominee must be confirmed by the Arizona Senate.

History

• A student was first added to the Board in a non-voting position in 1978.

• The Student Regent was granted voting privileges during the 1989-90 term.

• A statute passed by the 44th Legislature (2000) added a second, non-voting student member to the Arizona Board of Regents.

• Student Regents are now appointed for two years; the first year is served as a non-voting member and the second year as the voting Student Regent.
