Regents Adopt 2000-2001 Tuition and Fees

(Flagstaff-- Northern Arizona University) -- The Board of Regents has approved new tuition levels for the 2000-2001 academic year. Resident tuition at Arizona’s public universities will increase by 3.8 percent, an increase of $84. Nonresident tuition will increase by 4.2 percent, or $388 at ASU and UA, and 4.8 percent, or $400 at NAU. The increase will help provide funding for priorities that benefit students at ASU, NAU and UA.

Under the new rates, resident students at all three universities will pay $2,344 for tuition and fees. Nonresident students at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona will pay $9,800 in tuition and fees, and nonresidents at Northern Arizona University will pay tuition and fees totaling $8,776. Financial Aid

Two sources of student financial aid are directly impacted by tuition and fees. Each year the Board reserves money from tuition and fees for the Regents’ Financial Aid Set-Aside. A total of $13.5 million will be reserved for next year, an increase of $700,000 compared to 1999-2000. Last year 8,604 students received financial aid from the Set-Aside.

The Arizona Financial Aid Trust (AFAT) Fund also is affected by tuition. Each student is charged a fee of one percent of tuition each semester to go toward the AFAT Fund. These dollars are matched by the Legislature and awarded to students for financial aid. Last year students contributed $ 2.1 million, which was supplemented by $1.9 million from the Legislature. More than 2,600 students received financial aid from AFAT.

Residence Hall Rates

The Regents also approved residence hall rates as follows:

At ASU increases ranged from an $85 increase at Cholla to a $290 increase at Hayden/Best Halls. Rates for 2000-2001 range from $2,680 to $4,080, depending on locations and options chosen.

At NAU increases ranged from a $110 increase at Allen Bury, Peterson, Taylor, Tinsley and Wilson Halls, to a $364 increase at Cowden, McConnell, Reilly, and Sechrist Halls. Rates for 2000 to 2001 range from $1,942 to $2,196, depending on locations and options chosen.

At UA increases ranged from a $158 increase at Sierra Hall to a $221 increase at Arizona-Sonora, Coronado, La Paz, and Pima House Halls. Rates for 2000-2001 range from $2,051 to $3,141, depending on locations and options chosen.

Regent Roll Call

As part of a new tuition setting process, the Board took a Roll Call vote for the setting of tuition for 2000-2001. The Regents Judy Gignac, Jack Jewett, Gary Stuart, Christine Thompson and Don Ulrich voted for the $84 increase for residents. Regents Kay McKay, Christina Palacios and Hank Amos voted against it.

The Regents unanimously approved the $388 increase for nonresident students at ASU and UA and $400 increase for nonresident students at NAU.
