Sierra Vista Resident Represents 105,000 Students

Myrina Robinson, 20, a 1998 Buena High School graduate, is the Student Regent for the 2001-2002 academic year, serving as the Board of Regents representative for 105,000 students who attend Arizona's public universities. The Student Regent serves as a full voting member of the Board, which is the governing body of Arizona's public universities, including Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona. The position rotates among the universities each year.

Robinson, a senior political science major at NAU, is active in many campus organizations, including the Black Student Union of NAU, The Color of Success Honor Society of NAU, the NAU Residency Appeals Board and Student Government. Regent Robinson has participated in campus and community projects such as the Mountain Campus Master Plan, Kids Voting of Arizona and the Multicultural Leadership Program at NAU. She is planning to attend law school after graduation.

"I am proud to have been chosen by Governor Hull and by the students of Arizona to serve as a member of the Board of Regents," she said. " I am humbled by the reality that I have been entrusted by my peers, the students of Arizona, and the citizens of our state."
"My goal this year is to seek information to ensure the incorporation, respect and appreciation of the concerns of Arizona's students in decisions affecting Arizona's public university system. Working with other student leaders, Regents, the Governor and the Legislature, we can identify and implement efficient solutions and improve the integrity of the system."

Regent Robinson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest E. Robinson, Sr., who moved their family to Sierra Vista near the end of a long military career. Prior to living in Arizona, the family lived in Germany, Maryland, and Korea. Before graduating from high school, Regent Robinson participated in church youth groups, church choir and musical groups, the marching band, symphonic band and prevention programs for drugs and abstinence.

Regent Robinson replaces Mary Echeverria, a recent ASU graduate, who served as Student Regent for 2000-2001. Matthew Meaker, a second year law student at the UA James E. Rogers College of Law, will serve a one-year "apprentice" Board membership and will succeed Regent Robinson for the 2002-2003 year. This is the first year an "apprentice" year is served.

The Student Regents are chosen through a rigorous process that begins with candidates applying to the Board of Associated Students of Arizona. The student Board forwards three final candidates to the local student government on campus where the nominees are confirmed and forwarded to the Governor's office. The Governor conducts interviews and nominates one student
for the position. The Governor's nominee must be confirmed by the Arizona Senate.
