The committee searching for a new president for Northern Arizona University has announced the names of six candidates who have accepted an invitation to interview with the committee on May 6 and 7.
The candidates are:
- Dr. Roger W. Bowen, President, State University of New York at New Paltz
- Dr. Owen F. Cargol, President, University of Maine at Augusta
- Dr. Richard Davenport, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Central Michigan University
- Dr. John D. Haeger, Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Northern Arizona University
- Dr. Denise M. Trauth, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of North Carolina at Charlotte
- Dr. Michael A. Wartell, Chancellor, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne
The 25-member search committee, which includes Regents, faculty, students, administrators, alumni and community leaders from Northern Arizona, will meet with candidates in Phoenix and is expected to forward the names of finalists to the Board of Regents.
Finalists are expected to visit the NAU campus during the week of May 14 and meet with campus and community representatives in a series of meetings and forums. Schedules for those meetings and forums will be publicized prior to the candidate visits.
The Board of Regents is expected to interview the finalists on May 24. A final decision will be announced by the Board shortly thereafter.
The search committee has been meeting since January to identify a successor to NAU President Clara M. Lovett, who will leave her post when her current contract expires on June 30.
Regent Kay McKay, a resident of Flagstaff, has chaired the committee. “This appointment is critical to the Northern Arizona community as well as the state higher education system,” she said. “The committee had a pool of 81 excellent candidates to consider and has identified these outstanding candidates as having the qualities that meet the needs of the position of the NAU presidency. We are very pleased with the high level of interest in NAU.”
