Ahwatukee Resident Starts 2-Year Student Regent Term

Matthew Meaker, a resident of Ahwatukee in his second year at the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, has begun a two-year term as a member of the Arizona Board of Regents.

Meaker, 23, is the first student to serve a two-year term on the Board. He is the second student regent (non-voting apprentice member) for 2001-2002. He will be the voting student regent for 2002-2003.

While students have served one-year terms on the Board since 1978 – first as a non-voting member and since 1989 as a full-voting member – a one-year non voting year was added to the Student Regents' term by the Legislature in the 2000 session.

"I am excited to have this first year be a non-voting year so that I can spend some time building relationships with students and members of our Arizona University system," said Meaker. "I want to do this so that I can make the position of Student Regent more accessible to everybody and that in the second year when I have full-voting privileges, I can better understand their needs."
Student leaders lobbied for the "apprentice" year to allow student Regents an extra year to learn about issues facing the Board. While Regent Meaker serves as the non-voting apprentice, Myrina Robinson, a senior political science major at Northern Arizona University will be the voting Student Regent. She replaces Mary Echeverria, a recent graduate of ASU. The position rotates among the three universities each year.

The Student Regent is chosen through a rigorous process that begins with candidates applying to the Board of Associated Students of Arizona. The student Board forwards three final candidates to the local student government on campus where the nominees are confirmed and forwarded to the Governor's office. The Governor conducts interviews and nominates one student
for the position. The Governor's nominee must be confirmed by the Arizona Senate.

Regent Meaker received his B.A. in Communications and Psychology in May 2000. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the UA Student Bar Association, Toastmasters Club, Phi Delta Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa. He also is an Eagle Scout and a National Merit Scholar.
Regent Meaker is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Meaker. He graduated from Mountain Pointe High school in 1996 after participating in speech and debate throughout high school. His younger sister, Amanda, is a senior at Mountain Pointe.
