Raytheon Systems Company

Raytheon Systems Company has a long association with higher education in Arizona through its affiliation with Hughes Missile Systems, which it purchased in 1997.

Over the past 18 years, Raytheon has contributed more than $4 million to the UA to support the colleges of Engineering, Optical Sciences, and the Departments of Chemistry and Physics. Approximately $1 million has been contributed for research grants to faculty and students. Additionally, Raytheon has contributed thousands to the UA Health Science Center’s Cancer and Children’s Research Center. The UA also has benefitted from large quantities of excess equipment that has been contributed to the UA as Raytheon has upgraded its equipment.

Raytheon also has been a partner in ASU’s Computer Integrated Manufacturing System Research Center, contributing more than $1 million to the project.

The Raytheon Employees Association has established a scholarship program for graduating seniors from the Tucson area. The Raytheon Hispanic Employee Association has endowed two tuition waivers through the UA Hispanic Alumni Program and led the development f the UA Hispanic Alumni mentoring program.

The recruitment of state university graduates also is a high priority for the company, hiring 59 interns and 35 new graduates from Arizona's public universities in 1998. It also works with faculty to provide research grants and opportunities for research projects.

Raytheon was a founder of the Joint Arizona Center for Manufacturing Education and Training program, which encourages collaboration between Arizona’s universities and major high-tech manufacturing industries to improve and expand graduate education in manufacturing and product development in Arizona.

Raytheon also has worked with the UA to establish an on-site graduate program for Raytheon employees. Approximately 70 employees are participating in the Masters in Systems Engineering program at Raytheon. employees who successfully complete courses are eligible for reimbursement.

Raytheon Systems Company (RSC) is made up of five segments: Defense Systems; Sensors and Electronic Systems; Command, Control, Communication and Information Systems; Aircraft Integration Systems; and Training and Services. An historic name, Raytheon is associated with some of this century's great leaps forward in technology. Its 75-year history includes achievements such as secure wireless communications, shipboard radar, and guided missile systems.
