Robert and Katherine Herberger

The Herberger family has a long tradition of giving their time and financial support to Arizona State University. With their children, the Herbergers have made contributions to ASU through the Herberger Foundation, Herberger Enterprises, and the Arizona Community Foundation.

The Herberger family has donated or pledged more than three million dollars to benefit scholarships programs and the Colleges of Business, Fine Arts, Public Programs, and Architecture and Environmental Design.

"We give because it is the right thing to do," said Katherine Herberger. "I feel good knowing that my gifts of time and money are making a difference in the community, and hopefully shaping spiritual and moral values."

"Our focus on ASU began when we moved to Arizona in 1949. We also had a history of giving when we lived in Minnesota and Illinois. We give to a wide variety of organizations that serve our many interests--adoption, health, theater, art, music, our church, senior citizens, environmental concerns, populations issues, hunger, homelessness, youth, education, architecture, and others," said Mrs. Herberger.

The Herbergers have also donated many hours of volunteer service to various activities at ASU. Robert, 92, has served as a member of the College of Business Dean's Advisory Council, as director of KAET Channel 8, and as a trustee of the Fine Arts Association.

Katherine, 85, has served as a member of the ASU Library Associates, the ASU Campaign for Leadership, the College of Fine Arts Dean's Council and the ASU Foundation Board where she served as the first female chair from 1982 to 1985.

In recognition of their extraordinary contributions to ASU, the Herbergers were awarded Honorary Doctorates--Katherine 1987, Robert in 1991.

The Herbergers have supported many other causes in the valley, including the new Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona Theatre Company, Herberger Theater, Scottsdale Center for the Arts and the Salvation Army. The Herbergers gave more than 30 parks to the City of Phoenix. At one time, the Herbergers supported 89 different organizations.
