Cargol chosen as next NAU President

Phoenix--The Arizona Board of Regents today announced that Dr. Owen F. Cargol has been selected as the next President of NAU, succeeding Clara M. Lovett who is retiring when her contract expires on June 30.

"The Board is confident that Dr. Cargol’s skills and experience will make him an outstanding leader," said Board President-Elect Kay McKay, who chaired the search committee. "I am sure that he will be a valued asset to the state of Arizona as well as the Flagstaff and NAU communities."

"The Board faced quite a challenge in making a final decision," McKay said. "The three finalists that were forwarded by the search committee are exceptional individuals with excellent credentials."

Board President Donald J. Ulrich, Jr. also praised the three finalists. "Any of the finalists would be an outstanding president; in Dr. Cargol we believe NAU will have a leader who can articulate the interests of students and faculty, both at the Legislature and with the Board. Dr. Cargol will also continue to develop the community partnerships necessary for NAU to prosper."

President Ulrich also praised the search committee for their hard work.

Cargol, 50, is currently in his fifth year as President of the University of Maine at Augusta, which serves 6,000 students and delivers a range of liberal arts and professional degrees. The campus is also Maine’s foremost provider of technology delivered courses. Prior to joining UMA, Cargol served as President of Cleveland State College from 1993 to 1996. Formerly, Dr. Cargol served from 1987 to 1993 as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Highline College, a Seattle institution serving 12,500 students. Dr. Cargol earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Louisiana State University, a bachelor’s degree in horticulture and a master’s degree in adult and higher education administration at Oregon State University and a doctorate in higher education administration at The Pennsylvania State University. In 1992, Dr. Cargol held a Fulbright Fellowship to the Federal Republic of Germany for German Higher and Technical Education Systems.

Cargol is expected to move to Arizona this summer with his wife, Dai-Lih (pronounced Di-Lee) and their two sons, Austin, 15, and Alex, 13.
