Regents adopt university tuition and fees for 2001

(FLAGSTAFF-- NORTHERN ARIZONA UNIVERSITY) -- The Board of Regents has approved new tuition levels for the 2001-2002 academic year. Resident tuition at Arizona's public universities will increase by 6.1 percent, an increase of $140. Nonresident tuition will increase by 5.7 percent, or $550.

Under the new rates, resident students at all three universities will pay $2,486 for tuition and fees. Nonresident students at ASU and the UA, as well as new nonresident students at NAU, will pay $10,352 in tuition and fees. Nonresident students currently enrolled at NAU are grandfathered into a former practice of paying less tuition than nonresidents at ASU and UA. They will pay $9,328. The changes are outlined below.

*all students pay $25.00 per semester for the recreation center and one percent of tuition ($11/semester for 2000-01; $12/semester for 2001-02) Arizona Financial Aid Trust fee.
** NAU previously charged less nonresident tuition than ASU/UA. Students enrolling in Fall 2001 will pay the same nonresident tuition as ASU/UA.

The presidents of Arizona's public universities told the Board that tuition increases were needed to maintain the quality of education at the universities and keep Arizona's workforce competitive. Areas that have been identified for the possible use of increased tuition revenues are: information technology, advising and mentoring programs, employee salaries, financial aid and debt service for academic facilities.

UA Medical School

The Board also approved a $450, or 4.9 percent, increase in tuition at UA's College of Medicine, bringing the total for tuition and fees to $9,738. All students in the College of Medicine are Arizona residents.

Financial Aid

Two sources of student financial aid are directly impacted by tuition and fees. Each year the Board reserves money from tuition and fees for the Regents' Financial Aid Set-Aside. Approximately $14.5 million will be reserved for next year, an increase of $1.1 million compared to 2000-2001. Last year 8,732 students received financial aid from the Set-Aside in FY 1999-00.

The Arizona Financial Aid Trust (AFAT) Fund also is affected by tuition. Each student is charged a fee of one percent of tuition each semester to go toward the AFAT Fund. The fee for 2001-02 will be $12 per semester. These dollars are matched by the Legislature and awarded to students for financial aid. Last year students contributed $ 2.2 million, which was supplemented by $2.1 million from the Legislature. More than 2,991 students received financial aid from AFAT in FY 1999-00.

Residence Hall Rates

University officials cited increased utility costs, delayed maintenance, and improving computer connectivity for increases in residence hall rates for next year. The Regents approved the rates as follows:
ASU increases ranged from an $80 increase at Hayden/Best Halls to a $222 increase at Cholla Hall. Rates for 2001-2002 range from $2,760 to $4,302 per year, depending on locations and options chosen.
NAU increases ranged from a $191 increase at its traditional-style dorms, to a $257 increase at its Freshman Connections dorm. Rates for 2001 to 2002 range from $2,133 to $2,453 per year, depending on locations and options chosen.

UA increases ranged from a $146 increase at Sierra Hall to a $224 increase at Coronado, La Paz, and Pima Halls. Rates for 2001-2002 range from $2,197 to $3,365 per year, depending on locations and options chosen.

Application Fee

The increase in multiple applications, the rising cost of processing applications, increased student recruitment costs, and an increase in printing and postage costs have forced the universities to increase its application fee for out-of-state students from $40 to $50, effective summer of 2002.

Regent Roll Call

As part of a new tuition setting process, the Board took a Roll Call vote for the setting of tuition for 2001-2002. Regents Mary Echeverria, Kay McKay, Christina Palacios, Gary Stuart and Donald Ulrich voted for the $140 increase for residents. Regents Judy Gignac, Chris Herstam and Jack Jewett voted against it.
