My Turn: Bob Burns: Dithering governor lets budget crisis grow
Arizona Republic - Feb. 26, 2008 12:00 AM
Bob Burns, Chair, Senate Appropriations Committee
The governor's lack of leadership, her failure to take action early in identifying the budget shortfall
and continued failure to propose viable solutions have put Arizona in a budget crisis. And if history
is any indication, we can expect to soon hear that it is all someone else's fault. If Arizona were a
corporation, the Legislature is the board of directors and the governor the chief executive officer.

Residents blame poor security for sexual assaults
Arizona Republic - Feb. 26, 2008 12:00 AM
Residents of the Gateway at Tempe apartment complex near Arizona State University where a
woman was sexually assaulted early Sunday morning said the attack - the second this month -
is an example of the poor security at the complex. "It's ridiculous. It makes me so mad," said
Jordan Brown, 18, a freshman at ASU who's lived in the complex since August. "There's so
many breaks in the gates that anyone can come into Gateway."

East Valley Tribune - 02/25/2008, 23:12 pm
Arizona State is conducting an investigation into allegations of academic fraud and recruiting
violations within the baseball program. Mikel Moreno, a graduate manager with the Sun Devil
baseball team last year and a player on ASUs 1998 College World Series team, said he made
the allegations to ASU compliance officer Bill Kennedy last month shortly after his mother,
Roberta Cole, called school officials to allege cheating within the program.

A Senate panel voted Monday to let students and staff at community colleges and state
universities arm themselves for protection, but not their counterparts at public schools.

Student loans — Impact of changes limited
East Valley Tribune - 02/25/2008, 00:11 am
Your Feb. 10 article, “Low diploma rates hurt UA, ASU loans,” described some of the changes that
Sallie Mae is making to its private student loan programs, but reached incorrect conclusions with
regard to our programs at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona. We recently
discontinued certain non-standard private loan programs, which represented only 3 percent of our
$164 billion total student loan portfolio.

Probe of ASU baseball program under way
Arizona Daily Star - 2/26/2008
PHOENIX — An internal investigation has been launched into allegations of academic fraud and
improper recruiting against Arizona State University's top ranked baseball team. Coach Pat Murphy
acknowledged the investigation Monday and said he believes it will not result in sanctions. Murphy,
in his 14th year as ASU coach, also disputed rumors that a large number of ASU players will be

Denogean: If these bills pass, I'm buying bulletproof vest
Tucson Citizen - 2/26/2008
A batch of bills that would allow Arizonans to carry guns in more places and with fewer restrictions
has me wondering what our state legislators are smoking. Gunpowder, perhaps? Consider HB
2629, which would allow anybody who feels intimidated by another to respond by showing a gun,
drawing it or announcing that he has a weapon or both. It passed the House Judiciary Committee
last week despite law enforcement concerns that such a law could turn mere disagreements into
deadly gun battles.

Mental-health disclosures will not be required
ASU Web Devil - February 26, 2008
After officials said last week ASU would consider requiring students to disclose mental health
histories, the University clarified its position Friday and said no such policy is under consideration.
According to a media advisory statement from ASU's Office of Media Relations issued on Friday,
"ASU is not requiring — and will not consider requiring — such disclosure."

ASU asks for science funds funding
ASU Web Devil - February 26, 2008
ASU representatives went to Washington, D.C., last week to urge congressional leaders to
boost what they say is insufficient federal science funding. National university and business
leaders appealed for a $500 million emergency supplemental package to adequately fund
the Department of Energy Office of Science and the National Science Foundation — two key
sources of revenue for ASU research.

UA Daily Wildcat Online - 2/26/08
The Dean of Students Office will hold two open discussions that will address questions
concerning safety, university protocols and procedures. The identical panels will be open
to the entire campus with the first held today from 2:30 to 4 p.m., and the second March 5
from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Both sessions will take place in the Kiva Room of the Student Union
Memorial Center.

Editorial: Priced out of parking
UA Daily Wildcat Online - 2/26/08
Every day, students and employees who drive to the UA take part in a thrilling and dangerous
game. Finding an open parking spot in the overcrowded surface lots and garages across
campus requires keen powers of observation, lightning-quick reflexes and a predatory instinct
keener than a jungle cat. If you're a participant in the daily transportation tussle, you may want
to hone those skills: Next semester, the great game of parking on campus will be a little bit more
difficult.

Senate panel approves bill on guns in campus
Arizona Capitol Times - February 26, 2008
A Senate panel has voted above objections from law enforcement to let college students and staff
arm themselves inside the state’s community colleges and universities. But the proposal approved
in committee Feb. 25 carried a significant change – it now is written to exclude K-12 schools. Sen.
Karen Johnson, R-18, admitted her bill probably has better chances of passing if limited to community
colleges and universities.

Yuma Sun - 02/23/2008, 10:45 am

breaking two-plus-two program that has now produced many more than 3,200 degrees from
