Scottsdale CPA trains students as financial sleuths
The Arizona Republic - Feb. 6, 2008 11:24 AM
SCOTTSDALE - Arizona State University accounting students will soon get a taste
of what
it's like to play detective. They'll be digging through corporate books to find
evidence of fraud
and embezzlement. They'll be making educated guesses about how much
inventory and
future profits a business really lost in a fire or natural disaster. And when
they're done, ASU
law students will put them on the stand to defend their answers in mock court.
UA's Stoops:
Arizona State has turned into a JC
East Valley Tribune - February 7, 2008 - 6:31AM
It seems as if it’s not a national signing day unless Arizona State coach Dennis
Erickson
is asked to respond to a Mike Stoops charge about admissions standards at
ASU. On
Wednesday, Stoops, Arizona’s coach, called ASU a “junior college” while
discussing his
2008 signees with Tucson’s media. “Each school has to recruit to their school
and what
kind of requirements they (have),” Stoops said. “Arizona State has turned into a
junior
college, and we’re a four-year college. According to all the players, they say
its easier to
go to school there.”
Education exchange
program beneficial, flawed
Arizona Daily Star - February 7, 2008
PHOENIX — Karter Neal knew she wanted to be a veterinarian and practice in
Arizona, but
she also knew it was going to be tough financially because the state lacks a
school of
veterinary medicine. That meant paying out-of-state tuition someplace else. "I
would've
graduated with so much debt it would've been difficult for me to have a career
and make a
living after graduation," Neal said.
Guest Opinion:
Repealing property tax won't hurt education
Arizona Daily Star - February 7, 2008
The Arizona Constitution requires the Legislature to deliver a balanced budget
before the
start of the next fiscal year. That's a daunting task considering we started
this year with a
forecasted deficit of close to $1 billion. Daunting, yes. Impossible, no. It's
merely time to
make some smart decisions that address the immediate problem, but also set a
long-
term plan for success.
Group: fund
education to improve economy
Tucson Citizen - February 7, 2008
Fred DuVal likes to tell a story while making presentations to groups about
Arizona's crisis
in higher education. The state will know it's in trouble, he said, when
people start getting
their employee handbooks in Chinese. It might be hyperbole, but DuVal said it
isn't that far
off the mark. "This isn't a Sputnik moment," he said. "It is a very quiet crisis
and we won't
know we've lost until it's over."
Guest
Opinion: GOP cuts would savage Ariz. education
Tucson Citizen - February 7, 2008
Educating Arizona's children is an investment in our future. But sadly, some
legislators
want to keep Arizona in the back of the class by gutting crucial programs,
slashing student
funding, eliminating school-improvement money and imposing a moratorium on all
school
construction. Sen. Bob Burns and Rep. Russell Pearce have released the
appropriations
chairmen's options for the fiscal 2009 budget and proposed adjustments for
fiscal 2008,
including more than $1.1 billion in cuts to education.
Stoops takes shot at ASU's academics
Tucson Citizen - Feb. 7, 2008 12:00 AM
Score this in-state recruiting round to Arizona State, but University of Arizona
coach Mike
Stoops managed to sneak in a verbal jab on signing day. "Obviously," Stoops
said, "Arizona
State has turned into a JC, and we're a four-year college."
New
downtown V.P. wants stronger ASU, Phoenix ties
ASU Web Devil - February 7, 2008
The city of Phoenix and its booming ASU campus will soon be building stronger
connections
with each other under the vision of a new University leader. ASU President
Michael Crow
chose Debra Friedman as vice president of ASU's downtown campus Feb. 1.
Friedman's
appointment brings the Downtown Phoenix campus in unison with the organization
of the
University's other locations, said ASU Vice President and Provost Elizabeth
Capaldi.
350 students evacuated
UA Arizona Daily Wildcat Online - February 7, 008
More than 350 students were evacuated from Apache-Santa Cruz Residence Hall
yesterday morning after an ammonia spill preceded a fire alarm. Tucson Fire
Department
arrived at the dorm, near East Sixth Street and North Highland Avenue, at about
4 a.m. and
found ammonia spilled on a carpet in the hallway of the second floor, ...
