Arizona Republic - Jan. 24, 2008 12:00 AM
Isn't it true that today's elementary- and high-school classrooms are becoming
more
and more passé? With high-speed Internet technology and online courses, do we
still
need brick-and-mortar schools? There is no simple answer, but there are
interesting
advantages of both on-site and online schools to consider. First, a physical
location
provides students the opportunity to meet and interact ...

Educators put price on English as 2nd language
East Valley Tribune – 01/24/2008, 02:33 am
The state will have to spend an additional $300 million a year to teach English
successfully
to non-native speakers in Arizona's schools, administrators said Wednesday. That's
nearly
six times the $54 million the
state currently spends on English-language-learner programs.
And it puts an
exclamation point on the
financial dilemma facing the state as lawmakers
grapple with budget deficits
that reach beyond $1 billion.
Arizona is under a court order to
improve instruction to children struggling to
learn English. The estimate
released Wednesday
by Arizona School Administrators offered the first glimpse

of a law passed by the
Legislature in 2006. The law was designed to put Arizona
in compliance with a court
case filed in 1992, Flores v. Arizona ...

As superrich get richer, some tensions among colleges
Arizona Daily Sun – 01/24/2008
New figures on university endowments confirm it's not just the "haves" and "have
nots" in academe
these days. Beyond the great majority of colleges, there's a
growing group of the newly rich schools,
and -- at the top of the heap -- a tiny
cadre of ultra-wealthy institutions. The latest endowment figures
from NACUBO, a
college business officers' group, highlight the growing prosperity but also the
stratification among elite universities. That development is creating tension.
There are now 76
colleges and universities with endowments that have passed $1
billion ...

Gov. budget plan saves universities from cuts
Arizona Daily Wildcat– 01/24/2008
PHOENIX - UA officials say they support Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano's 2009
state budget plan,
one that doesn't cut funding from higher education in the
midst of an estimated $1 billion budget deficit
for this year and potentially
next year. On Friday, Napolitano and members of the Arizona Senate
proposed two
2009 state budget plans with stark differences with regard to higher education.
A proposal
drafted by the chairmen of the Senate and House Appropriations
Committee called for a 10 percent
reduction in funds to state agencies, which
included a $36 million cut to the UA's funding.
