Regents Award

The Regents Award for Outstanding Service to Higher Education was created in 1996 after former Regents Eddie Basha and Art Chapa proposed the award to recognize those groups or individuals who make important and lasting contributions to the higher education system in Arizona. Regent Donald Ulrich developed the concept for the ten pound bronze sculpture of a globe with a mortar board and diploma.

The award was developed by a committee of current and former Regents who also established criteria for nominees and selected the first year's winners. The cost of creating and casting the bronze award is entirely funded by private contributions from current and former Regents.

Nominations are made by or through any current or former Regent.

Regents' Professors

The designation of Regents' Professor is reserved for faculty members at Arizona's public universities who have demonstrated exceptional scholarship and outstanding achievements.

Each Regents' Professor nominee faces a rigorous nomination procedure. Candidates must:

• Be recognized nationally and internationally as a distinguished scholar whose work is of superior quality according to standards set by leading scholars in the field.

• Be a successful teacher of exceptional ability. The candidate's ability and desire to teach, stimulate, inspire, and communicate effectively with students should not be limited to an individual's particular discipline.

• Demonstrate interests and accomplishments that extend beyond a particular scientific, scholarly, or creative specialty and also must demonstrate a willingness to serve beyond the home academic unit.

The title, "Regents' Professor," serves as recognition of the highest academic merit.  The number of Regents’ professors may not exceed three percent of the tenured and tenure-track faculty on each campus. Appointments are made annually, or as deemed appropriate by the university presidents.
